Smarter waste handling: Schmid Folien’s journey to waste automation
Schmid Folien GmbH & Co. KG is a family-owned company led by owner and Managing Director Johannes Schmid, with his son Maximilian Schmid actively involved in the business alongside more than 50 employees. Specialising in the production of flexible packaging materials, the company focuses particularly on the food and dairy industries, supplying alu-paper-foil laminates for butter and cheese packaging, etc.
In 2023, Schmid Folien was introduced to Lundberg Tech through Kampf, a provider of slitting and winding technology. Kampf had just delivered a machine to Schmid Folien, and at the same time, the company sought to transition from manual waste handling to a more automated solution.
Johannes Schmid, Managing Director (Geschäftsführender Gesellschafter) of Schmid Folien, shares:
“I had already heard from a partner that Lundberg Tech could help us optimise our waste handling process – and this was for sure a goal for us. Before we installed the two WasteTech waste handling units, we were handling our trims endlessly. This meant we faced a huge volume of waste every day, resulting in many internal transports to get rid of it.”
“Further to this, we were manually feeding the trims into a baler press, which was complicated and work-intensive.”
To address these challenges, Schmid Folien installed their first Lundberg Tech All-in-one Unit (WasteTech 140-140U) at the end of 2023, followed by a second unit (WasteTech 140-2x-140U and a WasteCompactor 250) in mid-2024. These waste handling units now operate in connection with a Kampf Conslit Slitter Rewinder and a Doctor Winder Machine.
Schmid concludes,
“We are very pleased with our investments in automated waste handling, installed inline and in one step. Our old Venturi system used 5.5Kw while our WasteTechs only use a maximum of 2.2kW, and even less when using the frequency converter. The energy savings speak for themselves. Further to this, it is easier to handle the waste for our staff as the volume is now much smaller and is directed automatically into the bags attached to the WasteTechs. An extra bonus is less noise and dust. All in all this is a plus for our employees’ health and safety – and in the end increases our productivity to a higher level.”
Should Schmid Folien require future adjustments to their existing waste handling setup, Lundberg Tech will be ready to support them.
